Artist statement
I am a Brisbane based emerging artist with a practice focusing on collage and abstract acrylic works. I am interested in the way our world is visually presented and through my art practice, seek to reimagine and reinterpret that world.
Collage is the perfect medium for me - by using discarded items, I bring these materials back to life and create something entirely new that challenges the viewer to think differently about what they are seeing. I draw inspiration from the serendipitous discovery of found materials, the random unconscious selection process and the bringing together of disparate images. Layering paper into playful, surreal and surprising narratives and abstractions drives my work.
Working in series, I start intuitively by selecting materials that speak to me. Like solving a puzzle, I juxtapose images together, seeing what works. Sometimes my work incorporates acrylic paint to add depth and enhance the visual elements of the artwork. My work responds to a sense of playfulness and spontaneity, while incorporating strong colour and design choices.
Drawn to the female form, I am interested in observing the situation of women today, sometimes making a statement about how women are portrayed in our image-saturated world. Influenced by collage artists of the past such as Hannah Hoch and Kurt Schwitters, I am also inspired by modern day collage artists such as Lee McKenna and Johanna Goodman, among others.
